Give Summer Sundays a go

The North Hobart strip is a pretty cool place – good to meet friends for a coffee, grab a bite to eat before a movie at the State, take some flowers home or read the paper on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It has a unique streetscape and an eclectic mix of businesses and people, making it the perfect place to enjoy community atmosphere. After the festivities of the Taste Festival finishes, we have a golden opportunity to turn the spotlight on North Hobart. Here’s where my idea for a Summer Sundays trial kicks in. For four Sundays in summer 2010, I have proposed that Elizabeth St from Newdegate to Burnett is closed to through traffic and opened up for people to sit, wander and enjoy a variety of entertainment. Each Sunday could have a different spotlight – from world music, a dance party, a celebration of multicultural North Hobart or maybe a blues and roots bonanza. North Hobart has a vibrant artistic population. There is plenty of opportunity to work with local artists to focus on the soul of the space. With an active and engaged local community, Summer Sundays can be a fantastic celebration of summer, sun and fun. GIVE SUMMER SUNDAYS A GO! With close to 30 food outlets – including upmarket restaurants, pubs, bakeries, cafes and takeaways, there is something for everyone. It’s a perfect setting for a community celebration, locals and visitors will have the opportunity to hang in the strip. This is a trial – what have we got to lose? Let’s give Summer Sundays a go!
