Women

The Tasmanian Greens believe that the fundamental work which women do to keep society functioning is unrecognised and undervalued. Women are still exposed to injustice, harassment, discrimination, and inequity under the law and industrial relations.

Women have the right to participate in society and in all aspects of public life to the fullest extent of their interests and abilities. We believe in the protection of women's rights to equal respect, opportunity and responsibility in society, and full participation in all decision-making processes, regardless of professional or marital status.

To this end, the Greens will continue to endorse women candidates to maintain our outstanding record of women representatives, and practise equal opportunity in all of our organisations and committees. We will support anti-discrimination legislation and initiatives, and encourage the provision of a wide range of birthing options.

All women have the right to safety at home, on the street and in the workplace. The Greens' objective is to provide programs which educate both men and women to overcome the obstacles impacting on women's lives, and to redress women's status so that a more socially equitable society can evolve.

Measures

Workforce:  ensure equal pay and sponsored childcare; support government programs of equal maternity and paternity leave, equal access to retirement income including superannuation, and equal representation of woman and men for public boards and committees

Education: regulate equal access to all forms of education and training; encourage extension and bridging courses for women to facilitate their continuation or re-entry into formal education; encourage girls, through educational institutions and employers, into non-traditional areas of work and study in order to redress existing gender imbalances and increase the number of women in senior, policy and decision-making positions in educational systems; encourage early education programs on non-violent conflict resolution

Public Sector: institute affirmative programs to allow more women to progress to senior level positions; continue mentoring programs; provide and fund sexual assault support services around the State; create a society where domestic violence is not tolerated; ensure adequate funding to police and to child and family services which respond to family violence; ensure women's access to safe, secure accommodation through the provision of adequate emergency housing, a comprehensive housing policy, and a network of crisis and long-term support services

Legislation and Regulation: assess the efficacy of laws which have a bearing on violence against women and the treatment of victims and perpetrators; strengthen laws to prohibit portrayal of women or children as objects of violence or sexual exploitation; inquire into the role that the entertainment industry and the media play in the portrayal of women and children as victims of violent and sexual exploitation; use publicity and educational campaigns to bring about a change in the way violence is viewed in our society, including public education strategies which show that violence against women is a crime and reinforce, on all practicable occasions, that violence against women contravenes the Family Violence Act 2004

Migrant Women: encourage further educational facilities for the teaching of English to non-English speaking women; ensure that non-English speaking women have access to comprehensible information about social, legal, educational and cultural issues, and information about existing services; increase resources for interpreters; ensure that migrant women who have been the victims of trauma or torture are adequately and sensitively supported; increase resources for migrant women to become full participants in society so that their skills and talents are fully recognised, while accommodating cultural differences.

Women in Rural Areas: improve access to health services; provide access to and training in the necessary technology; increase access to women's services, especially respite care, education programs, and legal and financial advice; provide a rural childcare strategy that ensures equitable childcare; strengthen educational programs, including farm management and business training

Sport: support equal access for women to recreation facilities, coaching, sports education, competition, media coverage and funding; support programs which encourage girls to continue sporting and recreational pursuits beyond early secondary school
