Tasmanian Greens team for Denison announced
17 December 2009 - 11:35am
Tasmanian Greens leader Nick McKim today launched the Greens full candidate ticket for the Denison electorate that will be contesting the 2010 state election. Mr McKim said that the Denison team is determined to take the lead on city planning, public transport and health initiatives for accessible and affordable services that have been forgotten under Labor. The Greens’ Denison ticket comprises:
Cassy O'Connor MP:
Lead candidate for Denison, standing MP Cassy O'Connor has worked hard in the Tasmanian Parliament to prioritise liveable cities and public spaces. She has driven a response to the 21st century challenges of liveability, climate change and peak oil by releasing the Places for Tasmania's People initiative. Her background in the local community group Save Ralphs Bay shows her commitment to natural and urban places in Tasmania.
Helen Burnet:
Helen, 44 from North Hobart, was elected as the first Green Deputy Mayor in Hobart earlier this year. She has a long history of working with the community on council to improve urban public transport, affordable housing and urban renewal through planning in Hobart and surrounds. She hopes to use this local experience to provide better services and lifestyle opportunities for people across Tasmania.
Kartika Franks:
Kartika, 39, is a Senior Policy Officer with Housing Tasmania. She lives in Lenah Valley and has worked with housing and homelessness for seven years. She is committed to raising the quality of life for those struggling with the cost of living under Labor, by addressing affordability issues and the statewide gambling problem.
Penelope Ann:
Penelope, 60, is a former secondary school teacher and small business owner from Risdon Cove. She has worked in the local tourism industry for the past eight years, developing her own accommodation business with her husband. Her experience in the industry has taught her the importance of protecting and enhancing Tasmania's clean, green and clever brand. She is also dedicated to working with teachers and schooling communities to give Tasmanian students a quality of education that has been significantly compromised by the current state government.
Peter Cover:
Peter, 56, is an engineering worker from Claremont. His background in the Tasmanian workforce has made him aware of the importance of clean and green developments and fair employment. He believes Tasmania has a unique opportunity to create jobs and business opportunities while tackling issues such as sustainability and affordability through proper planning and new age projects.
Nick McKim MP said the Denison team has the diversity and commitment to transform Hobart and surrounding surburbs towards a more liveable future.
“It is time that Tasmania had the vision and creativity to bring planning and development processes into the 21st century. We have been delayed too long under a Labor government that does not listen to the needs of the people. We need to focus on renewing and revitalising our state so that services can be provided at low cost to people and the planet.”
